We had an interesting time trying to get to Chicago for Christmas. First, our flight was delayed over and hour. Normally this wouldn't be more than an inconvenience, but since we were flying into Milwaukee just before a snow storm, being delayed meant that we wouldn't miss the snow. We finally got off and on our way. When we got to Milwaukee, we had to circle the airport for 20 minutes until the runways were plowed. Instead of getting in ahead of the storm, we arrived right in the middle of it. Once we landed, we waited on the runway for 15 minutes as they plowed our way to the gate. We were practically the only ones in the airport.
God was really looking over us for this trip. We took off about half hour or so before one of the other planes caught on fire. If we had been delayed too much longer we would have been delayed longer by the fire and then probably wouldn't be able to land in Milwaukee. Thankfully, the runways were able to be cleared. As we were circling the airport I kept praying, "Please God, don't let us be diverted."
My dad and brother were there waiting for us. We got our luggage and found my family and started the snowy drive into Chicago. About half way home, my mom called. She had just gotten off work and thought we were home already (which we should have been). My dad told her that we were still at the airport and that he sent my brother in to find out more information. They had a discussion about getting a hotel room in Milwaukee if our plane didn't land soon. Russell (my brother), Micah, and I were doing our best to not burst out laughing.
When we were about 20 minutes from home, my dad called back and told my mom that we were being diverted to Midway Airport and that she would have to go and pick us up. By now it's midnight and my mom has changed from work and is getting ready to go to bed. Again, we could hardly contain our laughter.
Just as we turned onto our street, feet from our house, I called my mom and told her that we had just landed at Midway and we needed her to come and get us. We pulled into the driveway, unloaded the car, and rang the doorbell. My mom wasn't too happy, but at least she hadn't left the house yet.
For the whole week, my dad told everyone it was all Micah's idea. It wasn't. But it was funny.
