Tuesday - the morning started with a 7am call to the vet in an attempt to move up our appointment time. The night before our black cat, Judah, had been walking funny. Falling over, falling down the stairs, unable to jump on the couch, and her front legs were bent while back legs were extended. (Side note: this is the same cat who had surgery to remove some rotten teeth days after Mariella was born and had already been back to the vet once between then and now.) We ended up arranging it so Micah could drop her off and they'd examine her whenever they had time. While I was on the phone, Micah went into the kitchen and discovered that the refrigerator door had been left open overnight (the next person to tell me to get a new fridge that beeps at you gets removed from the Christmas card list). Everything went bad except the milk (no idea how that happened) and the casserole I pulled from the freezer the night before.
Micah headed out by 7:30 and I cleaned out the fridge, got breakfast for Julia, got the girls ready, and headed off to MOPS. (Thankfully they have breakfast there for the moms!) I got a call during MOPS that the cat's blood work came back fine and we could come get her and some meds for her. I asked about her walking and the vet didn't seem concerned.
The girls and I drove the half hour to the vet and talked to her. She said she went back and observed the cat and reexamined her. The vet then told us she's never seen a cat walk like that before and it could either be because she was weak from being dehydrated and barely eating or her life-long viral infection made its way into her brain. If she didn't get better, we'd need to see a neurologist.
Upon getting home I discovered that dinner was still frozen solid despite being in an open fridge all night and it wasn't dethawed enough to put in the oven. I fed Julia, Micah got home and put her to bed, then he volunteered to run to Walgreens to get the cat's prescription filled and dinner for us. Yes, that's right, our cat needs people meds.
Wednesday - We had Mariella's 1 month (5 week) check up. Her stats from that check up: 9lbs 2oz 21 inches long.
Julia behaved very well at the doctor's office despite an hour of tantrums leading up to it.
Following the doctor visit, we ate lunch with Micah at work and Julia got to play at the visitor center. Julia spent the afternoon screaming and having temper tantrums. She had given up her nap at the end of July and the transition away from them has been terribly rough! That night I took Julia's face in my hands, looked her in the eyes and in complete desperation said, "I need you to sleep really well for me tonight because I'm going to need you're help tomorrow." She said ok, fell asleep quickly, and slept 13hrs!
Thursday - I took my first trip to the grocery store by myself with 2 kids. It went pretty well. I carried Mariella in my wrap and Julia sat in the cart. The only problem was that the wrap started coming loose at the very end.
The vet called to check on Judah and said she had been really worried about her. This is why we love our vet and travel 30min for them.
The afternoon, again had many meltdowns by Julia. It is now a daily occurrence and quite tiring and draining.
Friday - Another morning phone call to the vet because Judah had stopped using the littler for poop. The vet gave us some things to do and said call back if it's diahrrea.
Julia's play date got canceled so we went to the mall to visit the pet store and ride on the kid train.
While walking through the mall, an employee at a kiosk addressed Julia and asked her to "come with me." I put my arm around her and guided her away while telling the guy no, but it was kind of freaky for me and I spent time over the weekend looking at talking to your preschooler about strangers. (There's not much out there for kids til they're 4 or 5.)
After the pet store, train, lunch, and playing at the mall playground, we went and got Julia's haircut. She looks so cute!
And there were more meltdowns this afternoon. They stem from Julia being overtired and transitioning to having a sister as well as some things we were lax on while I was pregnant and not feeling well enough to handle. But, writing this a week later, we are seeing improvement everyday.
Before going to bed, we found several spots of cat diahrrea around the house.
Saturday - The morning started with a 7am call to the vet. They told us they'd have a prescription for us and they'd call when it was ready. Since it was going to take all day, we decided to drive up I-70 to look at the fall colors in the mountains. I'll tell the whole story of Saturday in it's own post, but let me say this: it included lots of laundry and a few extra showers but no screaming or tantrums.
Sunday - I got out the bucket of bleach and I scrubbed the house because of all the poop around the house lately. The lawn was mowed, the dog was washed, more meds were picked up for the sick cat. More potty accidents happened. More showers were taken. And, of course, there were a few meltdowns.
Monday - I started the day with a Mariella diaper blowout that took her swing out of commission. It was followed shortly by a dog throwing up and a Julia potty accident. So much for all that bleaching the day before.
We took a trip to the store and on the way from the store to a doctor appointment, Julia says, "I went pee pee, Mama." Most of her accidents are very minor and need little clean up. This was a the-car-seat-is-no-longer-useable kind of accident. Luckily Micah was coming to the doctor appointment. We switched cars and I took the car seat home to wash. Then there was more screaming and tantrums.
I think you get the point so I'm stopping there. If you feel for me, send chocolate and margaritas. The clean up isn't so bad, it just makes the day kinda crazy. It's the tantrums and screaming that are so so draining, but I haven't yet dealt with one meltdown today and it's almost 6pm! It's happening slowly, but we're beginning to find our groove.
