This picture doesn't really give you a good idea about the size, but it is quite a substantial hole. When I stand in the hole, I am in there up to about my knees. Since a bank owns the property and not a person, we have no idea why the hole is there or anything about it. That does not stop us from speculating, however. Here are some of the theories:1) A tree used to be there. That isn't a far fetched idea, because all of the trees in the backyard are now stumps. We figure that this was the only tree the former owners were able to cut down and dig up the stump and roots for but didn't get around to filling in.
2) It's a "creature hole" as the inspector called it. What kind of creature, we have no idea. Immediately after declaring it a "creature hole" the inspector exclaimed "And I do not get paid to go in there!" His first suggestion was a snake. I don't think snakes that large live in Colorado. And if they do, I never want to know. To test this theory of a creature, today I took a large piece of branch that was sitting in the hole and plugged it up. If there is a creature living there, it will have to change the appearance of the hole in some way to get out. Then we'll know if we need someone to come and remove the creature. Our friend Mike wants us to stand on our porch with a garden hose, fill the hole, and sees what comes out. I'll let him and Micah use that method. I'll just watch with a video camera :)
3) A small animal - like a rabbit or something - ran down into a small hole and then a dog went crazy digging after it. Since the owners were about to have the house taken from them, they didn't care what the dog did in the backyard. A destructive dog isn't too crazy a thought because there is a hole in the fence that is kind of "repaired" and the gate of the fence is about to fall off. A dog could've done all this.
Today the plumber is at the house which means either tomorrow or Wednesday the appraiser comes. In the inspection and our objection, it was explained that the dirt around the foundation is slopping the wrong way. It needs to go away from the house for dranage purposes. The bank doesn't care and it has not done any damage to the foundation. The appraiser will probably care - at least that's what our lending agent and realtor both say. So I was out at the house today with our realtor (and her extremely cute little girls!) moving dirt to the foundation to cause a slope away from the house. And, of course, we moved the dirt from the hole :) We figured there's already a hole, who cares if it's bigger. We filled up bucket after bucket and moved the dirt for about 45 minutes.
Since we have an even bigger hole, our realtor suggested that we should just keep it going and put in a hot tub. Not a bad idea. Anyone want to give us a hot tub? :)
